How does Solar work?

Solar panels generate electricity during daylight hours, they work by converting sunlight into electricity. An inverter then transforms this electricity from DC (direct current) to AC (alternating current) to be used in your home to power lights and appliances.

If you are not at home to use the electricity, it gets sent back to the grid where you receive a feed-in tariff for every kilowatt hour (kWh) you export. There is a common misconception that this is where the savings are, maybe in the early days, but feed-in tariffs have decreased significantly over the years. The savings are in self-consumption - using the power you generate.

When you use the electricity your solar panels generate, you offset the cost of buying power from the grid, which is typically priced higher than what you earn through feed-in tariffs. For example, if your energy provider charges $0.30 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for electricity, but your feed-in tariff only pays you $0.08 per kWh, using your solar power directly saves you significantly more money than selling it back to the grid.

You can also include solar battery storage, meaning you can store excess energy for later use instead of exporting it at low feed-in tariffs. This stored power can be used during times when your panels aren't producing electricity, such as at night or on cloudy days, further reducing your need to draw expensive power from the grid.
